(1)The Japanese term can be read both ways.  It is sometimes translated as “I-novel.”

This site summarizes the current state and the preliminary results of the research project titled “The Japanese Watakushi shôsetsu/shi shôsetsu as Seen in Relation to Asian Culture: Comparison with Asian-Language and English Translations as an Opportunity,” (Katsumata Hiroshi, Research Coordinator), funded by a 2006 Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C). This research is positioned as an extension of the advances made by the Watakushi shôsetsu/shi shôsetsu Research Group of the Graduate School of Hosei University in the course of publishing the journal Watakushi shôsetsu/Shi shôsetsu  Kenkyû.  It is an attempt to break free from the heretofore dominant assessment that takes Western literature as the standard of comparison, and to get a better grasp on the watakushi shôsetsu/shi shôsetsu through comparisons with East Asia, which is more similar to Japan in language, climate, and cultural background.
